A lot of my work – and passion – revolves around diversity. I’m ever on the watch for ways in which the incredible diversity of North American cultures, races and lifestyles show up in media, politics, art, etc.
So I’ve got a big smile on my face today, because of two pieces of news:
The Wildrose Party is in a vicious election battle with the Progressive Conservatives, for leadership of Alberta. If they win, the PC Party’s 41 year reign will come to an end. Either way, a woman will be elected premier, because both the PC and Wildrose parties are led by women. If we can get two women to lead parties in what is considered Canada’s most conservative province, surely federal leadership can’t be too far off.
Dating advice book turned movie “Think Like A Man” was the top movie at the box office this past weekend, with $33m in ticket sales. I didn’t have high hopes for this film, when I read it refered to as an “urban film” (code for “black”) in a few reviews. I truly wondered if broad audiences would see a film with an all-black cast. Maybe they did; maybe they didn’t. Either way, it’s great to see this film in the top spot.
